Indian Railway handshakes with Malaysia

After winning all the accolades for managerial skills, Lalu Prasad Yadav (Railway Minister, Govt. Of India)

once again bagged limelight for Indian Railway after entering into a contract for a mega project in Malaysia to be built with the assistance of Indian Railway Construction (IRCON), a public sector undertaking of Indian Railway.

The deal came yesterday when Government of Malaysia entrusted the mega project of Electrified Double Tracking Project between Seremban – Gemas to IRCON International Ltd.

The railway minister said that the project will be completed within 48 months time with an approximate cost of one billion US dollars. The project also includes construction of 34 bridges, 107 small bridges and 8km long tunnel.

Reportedly, the first phase of this project includes completion of work up to Sangai Gaddud by July 2010.

Maintaining the contract as an important achievement in the bilateral relationship, the railway minister said that it further enhances the economic cooperation of both the countries.

Significantly, the Indian Railways made its way through the Malaysian terrain in 1988 with IRCON, which has successfully completed 11 major railway projects, including 441 kilometres of track rehabilitation and construction of 200 km new tracks.

IRCON is also known to lease locomotives to Malaysian Railways for the past few years which are being extended on yearly basis.

Speaking on function organised in his honour by Bharat Club (Association of Expatriate Indians in Malaysia) and Consortium of Indian Industries in Malaysia in Kaula Lampur, railway minister said that his department has taken an initiative to encourage Public Private Partnership (PPP) for the non-core sector in Indian Railways.

He marked that Indian Railway for the completion of its on-going projects need Rs 80,000 crore while it also sought to upgrade 26 railway stations as world class level and Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors need a huge financial and technical investment which can be done through PPP model.

The minister also invited Bharat Club to participate in important non-core Railway projects like construction of logistic parks, wagon investment scheme, wagon leasing scheme and setting up of agricultural outlets at more than 7000 railway stations, setting up of new factories for production of wagons, coaches and locomotives as well as construction of Dedicated Freight Corridors.

Three years deal between Reliance and Vinod Chopra

Vinod Chopra Films and Reliance BIG Entertainment have inked a multiple film production deal to co-produce feature films over the next three years.

The first feature film under the production deal is a mainstream English language film, BROKEN HORSES, which will be directed by Vinod Chopra himself while the second film is based on the classic Indian tale, TAALISMAAN, to be directed by Ram Madhvani.

Chopra's BROKEN HORSES , with a screenplay based on an original story by Chopra himself, is the work of several award-winning writers including Abhijat Joshi (Lage Raho Munnabhai, Eklavya and 64 Squares) and Jason Richman (Bangkok Dangerous, Swing Vote), and legendary BAFTA winner and Academy Award® nominated screenwriter and executive producer, Nick Pileggi as script consultant (Goodfellas, Casino and American Gangster). Chopra has recently returned from script and development meetings in Los Angeles and scouting locations in New Mexico.

Ram Madhavani’s TAALISMAAN is a love story inspired by the epic novel, Chandrakanta, written in 1892 by Babu Devkinandan Khatri, which inter-weaves and mixes intoxicating elements of magic and war.

After making a splash on TV with the soaps Saara Akash and Hotel Kingston, actress Sonal Sehgal is gung ho about her big screen debut. And why not? It’s opposite one of tinseltown’s hottest poster boys, John Abraham, in Nagesh Kukunoor’s Aashayein.

Ask about her working equation with John, and she doesn’t mind stating the obvious. “Oh! It was great working with him. He doesn’t have any starry tantrums… When we first met on the sets he said, ‘you look familiar’ and I laughed. I’m sure he’s got better things to do than watch TV.”

Kiss and tell

Ayesha Takia’s loss became her gain; Ayesha walked out of the movie because she was reluctant to do a kissing scene and Sonal stepped in. So, is the kissing scene still there?

She says, “Yeah. But why so much fuss about it? It may have been a big deal for her, but it wasn’t a big deal for me. In fact, we didn’t even have to do too many retakes. It is just part of your job — similar to doing dangerous stunts or crying on screen.”

Was working with John a big deal? “Why should it be? He’s a regular guy. Besides, I really don’t care about costars... that should be the last of your worries.”

She may have stayed away from television for two years, but the actress insists that it wasn’t intentional. “There wasn’t anything exciting so I got busy with theatre.”

But that doesn’t mean it’s goodbye to the small screen. “The biggest stars of cinema are on TV today. So how can one shy away from it. But I’m not planning anything — I take things as they come.”

The glam TV actress will be seen in a de-glam avatar in Aashayein, and Sonal is so nervous about her ‘new’ look that she hasn’t checked a single shot on screen!
“Nagesh asked me come without make-up, which my make-up artist confused with the ‘no-make-up’ look. So, he did a little touch up with base, nude lipstick, etc. The moment Nagesh saw it, he asked me to come back “without make-up”, so I went back and washed my face. And that’s not the only compromise she made for her role.

“I turned vegetarian a month before the shoot to avoid pimples, as make-up was a complete no-no. I hope there are no dark circles in any frame.”

Additional deployment of troops along border

Just a day after TIMES NOW brought to light undeniable proof of Pakistan infiltration along the international border, the Indian Army has finally taken up an aggressive position in the valley. With the increase in cross border firing instances, the Indian army has changed its tactic and has deployed 5,000 additional troops closer to the line of control in the 28 division area in Kupwara.

The troops are a part of the reserve force of the Srinagar-based 15 Corps of the Indian Army and will now move to the strike brigades of the 28 division in Tangdhar, Keran, Macchal and Gurez along the Line of Control (LoC). In addition to the additional deployement of additional troops, more units of the Rashtriya Rifles are also expected to move to the sector, thereby increasing the number to nearly 30,000 troops.

Infiltration is a real cause of concern, not only for the Indian Army but also for the government, especially with the elections in the pipeline in the state. According to top army officials, there are about 900 militants in the valley out of which about a quarter are very active. In order to curb the growing infiltration, the deployment of additional troops is the need of the hour in a bid to guard the border.

BSF confirms infiltration attempt

Meanwhile, in a related development, the DG of the Border Secuirty Force (BSF) -- A K Mitra -- confirmed that fences along the border that seperates India and Pakistan in the Samba sector, were indeed cut.

The BSF has increased its presence in the sector with the deployment of 1000 more troops in the area and has also initiated several steps viz. surveillance gadgetry is being upgraded, thermal imagers are likely to be installed and night vision goggles and devices are to be provided to the BSF men at the border.

When questioned about deployment of additional troops, A K Mitra, DG, BSF said:"Yes, we are going to enhance the strength and are planning to deploy 1000 more personnel. We are very hard pressed for resources since most of the batallion has been deployed for elections."
