Once the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) is ratified at the Parliaments of India and Switzerland, India will be given access to the information it wants on bank deposits and accounts of Indians.

BANGALORE: Once the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) is ratified at the Parliaments of India and Switzerland, India will be given access to the information it wants on bank deposits and accounts of Indians.
Switzerland’s Ambassador to India H E Philippe Welti disclosed this here on Friday.
At a session on ‘Switzerland- India: A strong partnership, investment & business opportunities’, he said the Indian Parliament was ready to ratify the DTAA and Switzerland would do it soon.
Switzerland, Welti said, still had distinction between tax fraud and tax evasion.
“While tax fraud is a crime, tax evasion is not, though it is prohibited in our country.
We have strict rules for banks and have signed about 70-75 bilateral treaties and agreements with several SAARC countries,” he explained.

Indian students duped by a 'sham' university in California have been forced to wear radio-trackers around their ankles, triggering a wave of anger through the Indian community : Some 1,555 students of Tri-Valley University, 90% of them from India, mostly Andhra Pradesh, face the prospect of deportation following the closure of the university in Pleasanton on charges of selling student visas.

First, they were duped by the Tri Valley University in California. Then, many of them were forced to wear radio collars around their ankles so that the authorities could keep track of their movements. Since the collars, fitted with GPS technology, are used to follow suspects and criminals on parole, India has asked the US authorities to remove these “unwarranted monitors” and treat the students fairly.

Minister for overseas Indian affairs Vayalar Ravi said on Saturday that the students were unaware of the fact that the university had no registration.

“We requested the US state department to take a lenient view because the students are innocent,” he said, adding that there were now enough pointers to establish that the students were victims of no major fault of theirs.
Vishnu Prakash, external affairs ministry spokesperson, said, “We have conveyed to the US authorities that using collars to monitor a group of students, who were detained and later released, is unwarranted. The devices should be removed.”
A large number of Indian students had got transferred to Tri Valley from other US universities, besides about 100 who had obtained visas in India to enroll in the university after taking the required authorisation.
Prakash said the students should be given the opportunity to clarify their position. “Those who wish to return to India should be allowed to do so voluntarily.”
New Delhi has asked Washington for information on the students and a report on the investigation and action taken against the promoters of the university.
So far, the principal investigator has provided the Indian consulate in San Francisco a list of immigration attorneys, who are prepared to guide or advise the students free of charge.
The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) proposes to post a detailed advisory for all Tri Valley students on its website sometime next week.

Some 1,555 students of Tri-Valley University, 90% of them from India, mostly Andhra Pradesh, face the prospect of deportation following the closure of the university in Pleasanton on charges of selling student visas.
Some of the students who approached Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to seek help were placed under ISAP (Intense Supervision and Appearance Programme) and put in removal proceedings.
A number of students have already been interviewed by ICE agents, most have been questioned and released but a few have been required to wear ankle bracelets, Jayaram Komati of the Telugu Association of North America (TANA) told IANS.
Throughout Saturday, Indian television channels had displaying visuals of Indian students with radio trackers around one ankle, which was apparently done to monitor their movements.
India protested the measure.
"We have conveyed to the US authorities that the students, most of who are victims themselves, must be treated fairly and reasonably, and that the use of monitors on a group of students, who were detained and later released with monitors in accordance with US laws, is unwarranted and should be removed," said Indian external affairs ministry spokesman Vishnu Prakash in New Delhi.
US Deputy Chief of Mission Donald Lu was called to the external ministry and apprised of India's concerns over the measure.
Prakash said that MEA and Indian consulate general in San Francisco are in touch with the Indian students and US authorities, adding that "everything possible" will be done to safeguard the students' "legitimate interests".
"The students should be given ample opportunity to clarify their position and present their case; those who wish to return to India should be allowed to do so voluntarily; those students who have not violated any visa or immigration laws should be given opportunity to adjust their status; and, those who are eligible to seek transfer to other universities should be given adequate opportunity and time to do so," he said.
The Indian community in the US has expressed shock and anger over the measure.
"It is very unfortunate that the students of the Tri Valley are being treated like criminals for none of their fault," Ramesh Annamreddy, another prominent community leader, said.
"Telugu community in North America is deeply disturbed", over the development, said North America Telugu Society (NATS) president Ravi Madala.
Requesting US Citizenship and Immigration Services to resolve this issue immediately, Madala said, NATS will fight to protect the rights of Indian students and is also working with the Indian external affairs ministry to resolve the issue.
Overseas Friends of Bharatiya Janata Party (OFBJP) demanded immediate intervention of Indian government asking it to "provide immediate alternative arrangements for all these displaced students of Tri Valley to complete their studies at no additional cost to them".
“It is a another big diplomatic failure of Indian government and the result is the suffering of Indian students at the hands of US Department of Homeland Security," said OFBJP President Adapa Prasad.
Meanwhile, Komati, whose organisation has some 35,000 members also advised students attending Tri-Valley University to seek immigration advice from an immigration attorney.
"Ultimately, we want to protect the kids within the boundaries of the law," he said. "They are not here to break the law. This is no fault of the students. It is the university not living up to the norms of society."
Expressing shock at the news, North American Telugu Association (NATA) A.V.N. Reddy said his organisation is is determined to make every effort in helping students of Telugu community in their legal needs.
It has also organised a conference call for students at 12.00 p.m. Sunday with immigration attorney Rajiv S. Khanna of immigration.com to understand the students grievances and guide them on the immigration issues.
Students can contact NATA for the conference call details by sending email to natacommunityservice@gmail.com with subject line "conference".
NATA is also planning to arrange counselling through Patrick Papallia who is specialist on civil litigation and business law, a partner at Herten & Burstien.
Meanwhile, the US authorities have opened a helpline for the Indian students. "We have set up an email address and voicemail that Tri-Valley students can use to contact ICE Homeland Security Investigations directly with their questions," Lari K Haley, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) spokesperson said.
Haley said any affected student can call the US number 415-844-5320 and leave the voice message. An ICE representative will return the call, she said. Students can also write to 'SFRHSIFraud@dhs.gov', seeking help.
India has also asked US authorities for provide full information about the students and keep it in the loop about investigations and prosecution against the Tri-Valley University.

The U.S. Commerce Department easing restrictions of exports of high-technology goods to India in recognition of the two countries' stronger economic and national security ties thus ending export controls for India, lifts ban on ISRO, DRDO

"Today's action marks a significant milestone in reinforcing the U.S.-India strategic partnership and moving forward with export control reforms that will facilitate high-technology trade and cooperation," Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said in a statement.
It follows President Barack Obama's meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in November in New Delhi, where they announced plans to expand cooperation in civil space, defense and other high technology sectors.
It also contrasts with remarks made by U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner before Chinese President Hu Jintao's visit last week to the United States.
Geithner tied the possibility of increased U.S. high-technology exports to China to movement by Beijing on currency and a number of trade reforms.
As a first step in implementing Obama and Singh's commitment, the Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security said it would publish a new rule changing how India was treated under Export Administration Regulations (EAR).
A key measure removes several Indian space and defense-related organizations from the U.S. Entity List, which imposes extra export licensing requirements on foreign groups or individuals whose activities have aroused concern about the possible diversion of U.S. high-technology products that could be used to build weapons of mass destruction.
Those removed from the Entity List include Bharat Dynamics Limited, four subordinates of India's Defense Research and Development Organization and four subordinates of the All Indian Space Research Organization.
The reforms also "realign" India's standing in the U.S. export control regime by removing it from several country groups associated with proliferation concerns. It adds India to a more favorable category consisting of members of the Missile Technology Control Regime.
"These changes reaffirm the U.S. commitment to work with India on our mutual goal of strengthening the global nonproliferation framework," Under Secretary of Commerce Eric Hirschhorn said in a statement.
Locke will lead 24 U.S. businesses on a high-tech trade mission to India in February.
The group includes Boeing, Exelon Nuclear Partners, Lockheed Martin and GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy.
The delegation, which also includes senior officials from the U.S. Export-Import Bank and the Trade Development Agency, will make stops in New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.
An administration official, who briefed reporters on condition he not be identified, said less than 1 percent of current U.S.-India trade was affected by export controls.
However, "the perception of onerous export controls certainly has been a hindrance to high-technology trade over the years," the official said.

"The goal here is to make sure we are in the best possible place to ensure trade in defense, civil space and high-tech can proceed in an expeditious and ultimately prosperous fashion," the official said.
Even with the reforms announced on Monday, there will still to be licensing requirements on many sensitive U.S. technologies that go to India, as there on some technologies to all countries, the administration official said.

CAN ALL DESI GILS ALONE BE BRAND AMBASSADORS! - EXCEPT GILS BOYS SHOULD ALSO BE THE BRAND AMBASSADOR

It is this very same powerhouse of talent who, after endorsing a million products, has now been signed up as the Brand Ambassador for Rin washing powder. Sources close to Bollywood Hungama told us, "Kajol has been paid a bomb to endorse Rin. The reason why she was chosen by the officials was purely because of her talent, squeaky clean image and her ability to connect with the audience of all age groups."

The source also added that she might just be signing on the dotted lines for yet another Brand Ambassadorship for a FMCG brand. Great going Kajol!

After having launched a thousand (well... make that a million plus) products with her ravishing smile, Katrina Kaif is now all set to do it all over again, this time round with the prestigious Lux soap. The news of Kats becoming brand ambassador has really many minds thinking since till now it was the eternal beauty Aishwarya Rai who was at the helm of things for the said soap brand, for long time now.

Also the last time round, it was the very same Kats who replaced Ash as the face for the Nakshatra range of jewelry. Kats will be endorsing 'Lux Purple Lotus & Cream', a soap infused with anti-ageing properties.

The good news for all the 'Shazahn-ites' (need we say who they are!) is that this pretty girl has been signed up as the brand ambassador for Skechers, one of the leading shoe manufactures globally. Speaking exclusively to Bollywood Hungama, Shazahn confirmed saying, "Yes, I have been chosen as the brand ambassador for Skechers. I have shot for a print ad, which will be out soon." One of our confirmed sources added that the reason why Shazahn was chosen was the fact that 'The company needed a fresh face that can express a thousand emotions with even uttering a word. And also that the said brand was a thousand times careful while choosing their first Indian brand ambassador as its one of the most premium and respectable brands globally.

After having being chosen as the brand ambassador for a million products, Akki is all set to lend his 'Phase Value', this time round to the electronics major LG.

Bollywood Hungama's confirmed sources said, "Akki was always an immediate choice for the said brand, after Abhishek Bachchan." Rumors have it that Abhi's contract was not renewed because he insisted on having his better half Aishwarya Rai as a part of the deal, which LG officials were not too forthcoming about. That's the reason they chose Akshay over Abhishek."

6 job-hunting mistakes frequently made during a recession

In any economic climate, job hunting is nobody's idea of fun. And with the growing number of folks hitting the bricks these days, it seems the task is getting even harder. But that's not precisely true, because the actual job-hunting strategies and techniques remain the same in any climate. What is bothersome, however, is that the process is likely to take longer. This leads to increased stress: financial stress, physical stress, emotional stress and family stress.

Most people do not perform at their best in stressful situations. They get tired more quickly, they get frustrated and run out of patience, and they make mistakes. Here are six job-hunting mistakes frequently made during a recession.

Mistake No. 1: Feeling entitled
In the new economy, your stellar background, great track record, prestigious degree and glowing references guarantee you nothing. The new employment paradigm is, "What have you done for me lately?" You must be constantly developing your skills and talents, broadening your interests and driving your career development. If you don't, you may well be left behind.

Mistake No. 2: Focusing on yourself, not the employer
Spend your time finding out which of a potential employer's needs are unmet instead of touting your brilliance. Saying, "I need a job" is irrelevant and depressing; that's your problem and has nothing to do with why this organization is hiring. Uncovering an employer's problem areas demonstrates your bona-fide interest, and offering your solutions demonstrates your critical thinking, creativity and approach to problem solving. This is how to get hired.

Mistake No. 3: Taking rejection personally
Face it; there are a lot of jobs you are not going to land. Use rejection as an opportunity to assess and build your job-hunting skills. Evaluate what you could have done better in your research or interview or with your follow-up. If you aren't getting rejected regularly, then you either aren't working hard enough to get your foot in the door or you're applying for jobs beneath your capabilities. No employer makes a decision not to hire you; they make a decision to hire someone else who did a better job of selling himself or herself into the position.

Mistake No. 4: Focusing on your age
It is human nature to focus more on one's perceived weaknesses as opposed to one's strengths.  This is especially true for people in the job hunt. Younger folks worry about not having enough experience; older folks worry about looking overqualified.  If you don't want a potential employer to focus on your age, make sure you focus on what strengths you bring to the party: energy, track record, endurance, patience, technology skills, people skills, creativity and work ethic. Sell yourself based on what you have.

Mistake No. 5: Looking for a silver bullet
Some job hunters swear by recruiters; others by online job postings. The latest buzz is that social networking sites are making all other job-hunting techniques obsolete. There is no one best way to job hunt.  If you want to increase the effectiveness of your job search, you must spend more time on it and use every technique in the book. This means answering print ads, responding to online job postings, contacting recruiters, cold-contacting potential employers, networking your brains out and using social networking sites to pursue all of these strategies. Sorry, there are no silver bullets or genies in a bottle.

Mistake No. 6: Absorbing too much news
Yes, there's a recession. Yes, a lot of folks are out of work. And, yes, finding a job is a hard job in and of itself. But, no, the sky is not falling. And yes, if you work hard and long enough at it, you will land a good job. The media's motto is, "If it bleeds, it leads." Bad news is their stock in trade. You will never see a story about company hiring back 10 workers or a person who landed a great job after a rigorous job hunt.  A regular diet of bad news will convince you that no one is hiring (untrue), that you should avoid employers that have had layoffs (bad strategy) or that maybe you should just move to China (bad idea unless you speak Mandarin). Get out, have some fun, work at keeping your energy and spirits up, and network with optimistic people.

Eventually this recession -- like all recessions -- will really be over and you'll be better prepared for (gulp) the next one

Kites' was supposed to release last year but got delay.

'Kites' premiered at the AMC Empire in Times Square on Sunday night. The premiere was attended by Hrithik, Barbara, director Anurag Basu, producer Rakesh Roshan, music director Rajesh Roshan and film celebs like Karan Johar and Mira NairThe fans of Hrithik Roshan in New York had waited for this day for long. The New York premiere of Kites at AMC Empire theatre, Times Square, turned out to be an affair to remember for both the star and the fans.

Though Hrithik and his co-star Barbara Mori were fashionably late for the event, fans were bustling in the busy Times Square area across the 42nd street since morning to catch a glimpse of their favourite star.

More than a Bollywood film, 'Kites' also has the elements of a film for world audiences and that's what Brett Ratner (editor of films like 'Rush Hour') felt. When Ratner saw 'Kites', he thought that it's an Indian film that can easily appeal to western audience.

The Hindi movie is actually 130 minutes long. Ratner has edited it to a 90-min long sleeker, racier version of the original with less drama. And Ratner was also sure about the Hrithik-Barbara pairing, who were not American stars but have the appeal and chemistry that will work in Hollywood. His 'Kites Remix' version will release on May 28. "Kites should resonate with Mexican audiences because Barbara Mori is a popular Mexican telenovela actress. The part of the film which segues into Mexico will have a big appeal." But both of them remain unperturbed by the gossip.

If Barbara has said that she's used to being linked with her co-stars back in her home country Mexico as well, Hrithik has clarified that his wife Sussanne knows the truth and that is all he cares. In fact, Hrithik doesn't mince words in praising Barbara to heights. "...I was completely bowled over. She has a lot of sex appeal as well. And that is a lethal combination!" Hrithik is quoted to have said. rithik said: "She has met many of my friends from within and out of the industry... They all love her. Everyone wants to marry Barbara!"

But the sad thing is that Barbara doesn't believe in marriages. She already has a son out of the wedlock and is happy being a single, unmarried mother.

THE TROPICAL CYCLONE LAILA MAY CHANGE FARMERS

The monsoon system over the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman and Nicobar islands may "disintegrate" after tropical cyclone 'Laila' makes landfall on May 20, D. Sivananda Pai, a director at the India Meteorological Department, said in a phone interview. It may take a week for the monsoon to regroup and advance further, he said.Cyclone Laila was set to slam into the state of Andhra Pradesh on Thursday morning, with forecasters warning of a sea surge, disrupted power and communication lines, and wind gusts reaching 155 kilometres an hour. The Indian Meteorological Department said the cyclone was centred in the Bay of Bengal, 190 kilometres (120 miles) east of Chennai, and would strengthen before hitting the coast near the city of MachilipatnamThe weather department in its latest warning said a "storm surge" of up to two metres (six and a half feet) above the regular tide was likely to inundate parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh.

It also warned of "high to phenomenal" sea conditions.

"The focus is on evacuation now. People are advised to keep important documents and valuables ready and be prepared to move to shelters at short notice," said Marri Sashidhar Reddy, an official at the National Disaster Management Authority.

Some people had already evacuated their homes and authorities were preparing helicopters and boats for relief work, he addedAn official source at Reliance Industries, which operates India's biggest gas field off the Andhra Pradesh coast, said the company had halted crude oil output in the Bay of Bengal. The impact of the weather system was also felt in Tamil Nadu state -- just south of Andhra Pradesh -- with heavy rains and gale-force winds on Wednesday.

The cyclone, packing sustained winds of 65 kilometers (40 miles) an hour, was about 650 kilometers east of Chennai at 5:30 a.m. local time, the U.S. Navy Joint Typhoon Warning Center said. Waves were 3.7 meters (12 feet) high near the storm's eye, where winds were gusting to 83 kilometers per hour. Farmers in India, the world's second-biggest producers of rice and wheat, rely on the rainy season to water their crops as about 60 percent of arable land isn't irrigated. Winter- harvested crops, including rice, corn, lentils, cotton and soybeans, are planted after the monsoon begins.

Rains this year may be 98 percent of the 50-year average, the Meteorological Department said April 23. Showers may reach the southern Kerala coast May 30, the weather bureau said May 14. Tropical cyclone Laila strengthened as it crossed the Bay of Bengal toward India's east coast and is forecast to reach hurricane strength before making landfall in Andhra Pradesh, a major rice-growing area, later today.

The cyclone, with sustained winds of 102 kilometers (63 miles) per hour, was about 220 kilometers east of Chennai at 11:30 p.m. local time, the U.S. Navy Joint Typhoon Warning Center said. Waves were 4.6 meters (15 feet) high near the storm's eye, where winds were gusting to 130 kph.

The cyclone was moving west-northwest at 20 kph and its winds are forecast to strengthen to 139 kph by late tonight, with gusts to as high as 167 kph. The storm is expected to make landfall south of the city of Vijayawada late today or early tomorrow

ndia is regularly buffeted by cyclones that form in the Bay of Bengal between April and November, bringing destruction and flooding to coastal communities. Tropical Cyclone Aila left 169 people dead and affected more than 7.7 million people in India and Bangladesh last May.

The U.S. Navy Joint Typhoon Warning Center also issued an alert that a tropical cyclone may form in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Somalia. The storm is moving west-northwest toward the south coast of Yemen, with winds speeds of 46 to 56 kph, the center said.

There is no cap on the number of forms to be sold during the 17-day period, but the launch price will be applicable only to one lakh customers who will be chosen through a computerised draw within 60 days of the close of bookings. Applicants will have the option to retain their booking even if they do not get an allotment in the first phase at the initial price.

Tata Group has started producing the Nano at its plant in Pantnagar, Uttarakhand, only last month — around 4,000 units a month. The carmaker hopes to produce just about 50,000 of them this year. The new dedicated plant at Sanand in Gujarat will be ready by early-2010. It will have an initial annual capacity of 2.50 lakh units. This will be scalable to five lakh units.

Response in Kolkata

Raktima Bose reports:

Typifying the mood elsewhere, Nano fever gripped Kolkata on Thursday. Scores of buyers as well as curious onlookers crowded Tata Motors showrooms.

While some were busy assuring themselves about the robustness of the displayed model by tapping its body or viewing the engine, others were involved in conversations with showroom employees on the formalities of the booking process. There were others standing at a distance admiring the car.

Mainak Majumdar, an information technology professional posted in the U.S., had come to one of the showrooms to book a car for his wife.

Asked why he chose Nano, he replied: “It is built with indigenous technology but the features are almost similar to the car that I own in the U.S. Also, since there is so much of hype around this car, I want to try it out.”

Some people, however, seemed chagrined that the car was being manufactured in a plant in Gujarat instead of at Singur in West Bengal.

Shyamal Chakroborty is one of them. “The people of the State do not know what they have lost. Had this car been launched from here, it could have changed the industrial landscape of the entire State,” he said.

Many visitors

“We are getting a very encouraging response. Many people are visiting our showroom to enquire about the car. Some of them are also booking it on the spot,” said Binod Agarwal, director of one of the largest Tata Motors showrooms here.

Hrithik-Susanne split? Due to Hrithik's rowing proximity to his Kites co-star Barbara Mori

The worst seems to have come true for one of the industry's most loved couples. If reports are to be believed,Susanne Roshan has walked out on husband Hrithik with their two kids and moved into her parents' home in Juhu. The reason for the move is said to be Hrithik's romantic liaison with his Kites co-star Barbara Mori.  The buzz is that Susanne had been trying to cope with it for months, but finally made up her mind to walk out. The Roshan family insists that the star's wife has shifted temporarily due to renovations in the house, but according to close sources, that's far from the truth.  Barbara not a phase A family friend of the Roshans informs us, "Hrithik and Susanne have been having problems for a while now. Initially, everyone thought that Barbara was just another phase in his life. Nobody expected Hrithik to get so serious about her. Susanne has been trying to come to terms with it. But when nothing worked, even her parents supported Susanne in her decision to leave him." Family 'affairs' Rumours about the Hrithik-Barbara affair have been the talk of the industry for over two months now. The couple apparently got really close during the last shooting spell in Mumbai. Hrithik has also become extremely fond of her family, including her mother and  her brother. Hrithik apparently even made a trip to Amby Valley near Lonavala with the actresses' family, minus his wife.  Few appearances Reveals a source, "The couple hasn't been making public appearances together for months, including at awards functions. However, when the talk of trouble in their marriage began getting louder, they made an appearance together at Amrita Arora's wedding, but their body language spoke volumes.
Last week, they even made an appearance at Manish Malhotra's fashion show but something went wrong after that." Roshans hope... It's believed that Susanne has taken the final step after a lot of consideration. "Both Sanjay and Zarine Khan have given her the emotional strength to take the right call. All they want for their daughter is her happiness," says our source.  However, Susanne still continues to be on good terms with Hrithik's family, who are hoping that this is just a momentary roadblock in the relationship. Pinky and Rakesh Roshan haven't given up hope yet. "They are hoping to find a solution to the problem once Hrithik is back in town," says the friend.  "Something major must have happened between the couple in the last three days because Susanne walked out of the house when Hrithik was away," reveals the source. Barbara Mori is believed to be abroad.  Very much in love All calls to Susanne remained unparents' home. But she insisted it wasn't because she had walked out on her husband.  "This is completely untrue. Duggu and Susanne are very happy and very much in love. Susanne had to shift out of their flat last week with the two kids as their ceiling is undergoing anti-termite treatment. The kids can't stay at home while the treatment is going on so Susanne is staying at her mom's place."  "Susanne should be back home in a couple of days when work gets over," added Sunaina. But even if they make up, sources close to the couple insist they'll be treading on thin ice.  Hrithik flies from SA to save marriage Hrithik Roshan flew in last night from South Africa and drove straight to meet Susanne at her parents' place in Juhu.  Said Hrithik, "I am here sitting with Susanne in her mom's house after dining with the entire family. We have both shifted here for a week with the kids because of termite problems. "We are renovating sections of our floor."
