India's highest civilian honour- the Bharat Ratna for batting maestro Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar

The demands to decorate batting maestro Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar with the country’s highest civilian honour- the Bharat Ratna – has gained momentum ever since Team India lifted the prestigious Cricket World Cup trophy after toppling Sri Lanka in the finals held in Mumbai.

Voices in favour of Sachin are coming from all walks of life and several former cricketers, eminent sport personalities, Bollywood stars and even political parties have now joined the chorus to bestow him with the top honour.

Going by Sachin’s extraordinary accomplishments and the numerous accolades, which this living legend has won for his team and India, he is already a "Bharat Ratna" in the eyes of his admirers whether he actually gets it or not. So felicitating him with the country’s top civilian honour will just be a fitting tribute to this God of cricket for achieving many milestones in his over two-decade long career.

The demand to decorate the batting maestro with the Bharat Ratna was first made way back in the year 2003 by the Shiv Sena and seconded by the then Human Resource Development (HRD) minister Murli Manohar Joshi.

The talks to confer upon him the Bharat Ratna again gained momentum after Sachin became the first batsman in the history of One-Day International Cricket to score a double hundred. Sachin achieved this rare feat, while tearing apart the strong fielding set-up by the South African team at Gwalior in February 2010.

MS Dhoni lifts the IPL trophy and collects Rs 6 crores from Lalit Modi. That's it from all of us here at the commentary desk. It's been a long tournament but we have had a great time covering this. This is the trio of Ajith, Mayank and Srivasthsa signing out. Hope you have enjoyed the coverage as much as we have done bringing it to you. Until the T20 world cup, it's good bye from all of us here. Cheers!

MS Dhoni: The credit goes to the team, we were under pressure in the middle of the tournament, the support staff gave us what was required, credit goes to the franchise owners for backing us and giving us the confidence. The wicket in Mumbai assists the faster bowlers and we were banking on Bollinger to do the trick. It's all about handling pressure and not many other than Sachin could handle that pressure in crunch situations. They had some good hitters towards the end. This was the season that got us together. It's really good to know Haydos, Bolly and Bailey. The celebrations have been good, we will lose a few players next year considering the auctions. IPL is getting bigger and better. The benchmark keeps on going above. Lot more day games will be played with 2 new teams coming. The pressure is on the office bearers for keeping the standards high.

Sachin Tendulkar: We could have played better, some catches went down, we could have accelerated a bit more in the initial overs. One of those days that did not go our way, but I would take this opportunity to thank all the Mumbai Indians' supporters. We did not do well in our fielding. The journey was fantastic, some of the youngsters were really fantastic. Towards the end of the tournament, the special effects from Pollard was fantastic. I thank the support staff and the owners for their support. The hard work started after the end of IPL 2, we did well to get the team together and play some nice cricket. Most probably, I will be playing the next year as well. I would like to congratulate CSK for winning the tournament.
Mumbai Indians get Rs 3,00,00,000 for being the runners up.
This is not getting over yet, the umpires are now being asked to collect the mementos.

Sachin Tendulkar is the DLF Golden Player of IPL 3.

Pragyan Ojha: It's good that I have won this but it would have been better if our team had qualified for the finals.

Pragyan Ojha collects the Purple Cap

Sachin Tendulkar collects the Orange Cap

Dhoni collects the Kingfisher fairplay award.

S Tiwary gets the U-23 success of the tournament award.

Breaking news: As soon as Modi gave his speech, the BCCI has sent a suspension letter via e-mail to Lalit Modi. A 3 member committee will take over the management of the IPL.

Andrew Symonds gets the 'Karbol Kamaal catches' award for the whole of IPL 3.

RS 11,25,000 has been given to the Indian Cancer society by Karbon mobiles.

Suresh Raina: Finally, we won it. All credit goes to the support staff and the captain. It's been a great year for us, we have performed really well, and by the grace of god it's been really nice. To sum it up in one word today was 'fantastic'.

The Man of the Match award goes to "Suresh Raina"

The 'maximum sixes award' goes to Suresh Raina

Lalit Modi: For many years I have lived a dream that India would have a sports league that we would be proud of. We have had some off-field issues that are mainly due to half-truths. If there is any flouting of rules, I take full responsibilities. I assure that IPL is clean and transparent. We should not allow this brand to be diluted. We must help this evolve to be stronger and better. As the proverb goes " The obstacle is our path", we have faced several challenges. I thank all my team members, team members, BCCI officials, sponsors and everyone for their support. All I wanted is to leave a footprint in this glorious game. My final thank you is to all the fans, we missed you last year and it's your passion that keeps us going. Thank you!!

Two Indian schemes in finals for global green energy awards

Two pioneering schemes in India are among the finalists for this year's Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy, the organisers of the awards have announced. First finalist, French charity Groupe Energies Renouvelable Environnement et Solidarites (GERES), which works with local groups in Ladakh to help farmers grow fresh vegetables year-round in simple passive solar greenhouses. The result is the availability of spinach, coriander, onions, garlic and strawberries in the markets of Leh even when the temperature is well below freezing point. The other finalist from India, Saran Renewable Energy Pvt. Ltd in Bihar, one of the finalists, has installed a new gasification system that generates electric power for 11 hours a day using locally-sourced biomass, providing a popular, sustainable, and cheap alternative to an unreliable grid supply. The 220 MW of electricity produced in a year is currently sold to 10 businesses which previously used diesel generators, as well as farmers, a school and a clinic. The result is a better-quality and more reliable electricity supply that also prevents the emission of about 200 tonnes of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide every year from the 77,000 tonnes of diesel that would otherwise be used, and helps to secure income for the 100 local farmers who supply the biomass, the organisers of the London-based awards committee announced. Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy recognises the efforts of individuals or organisations in the deployment of locally-available renewable energy in the developing world with the aim of combatting climate change and reducing poverty. The Award carries a total prize tag of £350,000 ($567,000), which will be used to expand and promote these projects. Other finalists are from the US, China, Nicaragua, Uganda and Ethiopia. The winner will be declared June 11.

Congratulate Abhinav Bindra!

India on a High: Bindra bags first Olympic Gold

Abhinav Bindra gave India its first gold medal at the Beijing Olympics when he won the 10 metres air rifle event on Monday morning.

The 25-year-old Indian shooting ace, who qualified in fourth place for the final, finished with an overall score of (596+104.5) 700.5 in a thrilling finale which went right down to the last shot.

Bindra's historic feat makes him India's first individual gold medallist, bettering the silver medal feat of double trap shooter Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore in Athens 2004.

India's last gold medal at an Olympics came in 1980 when the hockey team emerged triumphant in Moscow.

Abhinav Bindra Achievements:

Abhinav Bindra made a junior world record score of 597/600 in 2001 Munich World Cup and won bronze; gold in 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games; became the first Indian shooter to win a World Championship gold; Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 2001.

Abhinav Bindra is the brightest star among a new breed of talented Indian shooters. Born on September 28, 1983, Bindra is quite often criticized for not delivering on the promise he showed as a child prodigy.
