As India grapples with a major public health problem, being home to an estimated 50.8 million diabetic population, the largest in the world, experts say "consuming a few almonds daily can help combat the lifestyle disease."
"Eating almonds has a positive effect on reducing low density cholesterol and also improves insulin sensitivity; so it does help in pushing diabetes away," says Ritesh Gupta, head of clinical operation at Fortis C-Doc Hospital.
"It is a healthy source of fibre, protein and calories and has been found to have a positive effect in reducing bad cholesterol and improved insulin sensitivity," Gupta told.
Diabetes is caused when there is deficiency of insulin hormone, which controls blood sugar level. Its symptoms include fatigue, excessive thirst and frequent urination.
"With an estimated 50.8 million people living with the disease, India has the world's largest population of diabetics in the world, followed by China with 43.2 million," says the World Health Organisation (WHO).
LONDON: It seems your grandmother was right fasting for a day is good for your health. And, now a study says that going without food for 24 hours may cut your risk of developing heart disease and diabetes.
Researchers have based their findings on an analysis of health and habits of over 200 residents in Utah. X-ray scans revealed narrowing of arteries in 75% of those who didn't fast. Clogged arteries affected 63% of those who said they often skipped meals.
A study has found that the decreasing blood levels of a protein that helps control inflammation could be a sign that a child will develop diabetes.
Georgia Health Sciences University researchers are looking at blood levels of interleukin-1 receptor antagonist, or IL-1ra, in children because their genes put them at risk for type 1 diabetes.
They are also looking at diabetic mice missing IL-1ra to see how the protein deficiency affects immune function and destruction of insulin-producing islet beta cells.
“We want to know if we can use IL-1ra levels to identify children who will soon develop the disease, then use IL-1 inhibitors to prevent it,” Dr. Sharad Purohit, biochemist in the GHSU Center for Biotechnology and Genomic Medicine, said.
IL-1ra helps reduce inflammation and Purohit’s preliminary evidence suggests that low levels predict inflammation is increasing and the immune system is going to attack insulin-producing cells.
Il-1 inhibitors already are used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, where inflammation destroys joints. Clinical trials are underway in type 1 diabetes and to see if an inhibitor can halt the islet cell destruction that occurs in type 1 diabetes as well.
Dr. Jin-Xiong She, Director of the Center for Biotechnology and Genomic Medicine said while acknowledging the inhibitor may improve type 1diabetes outcome, GHSU scientists want to know if it can also be used preventively.
IL-1ra competes with its counterpart IL-1beta for the IL-1 receptor. In type 1 diabetes, inflammation-promoting IL-1beta appears to be winning.
“It’s a balance; it’s a competition. There is always a balance between beta cell production and destruction and any process that can change the balance can push you to disease or help you recover from it,” she said.
“In this case, we believe that knowing the balance is off can actually help prevent disease,” she added.
A study has found that diet fizzy drinks and other artificially sweetened beverages do not cause diabetes, as had previously been thought.
Researchers at Harvard University said that while regular soda and other sugary drinks can increase a person's risk of diabetes, drinking artificially sweetened soft drinks, coffee or tea will not.
LONDON: Researchers from the Massachusetts General Hospital
(MGH) have suggested that measuring the levels of small molecules in
the blood could predict diabetes risk as much as a decade before first
symptoms appear.
They said the levels of five amino acids not
only indicated increased diabetes risk in a general population but also
could differentiate, among individuals with traditional risk factors
such as obesity, those most likely to actually develop diabetes.
"These findings raise the possibility that, in selected individuals,
these measurements could identify those at highest risk of developing
diabetes so that early preventive measures could be instituted," said
lead author Thomas Wang.
The researchers found that elevations in
five amino acids — isoleucine, leucine, valine, tyrosine and
phenylalanine — were significantly associated with the later development
of type 2 diabetes.
Complications related to diabetes can include heart and kidney disease, nerve damage, blindness and circulatory problems that can lead to wounds that will not heal and limb amputations.
Sadly, 1/3 of diabetics are undiagnosed and have no idea they are going to have liver failure or kidney failure or go blind or die thinking they have the flu or all four!
The way conventional medicine treat diabetes isn’t treating diabetes and prolonging it. diabetes can be reversed if a person wants to do it! Diabetes isn’t a sugar problem but malnutrition of the body’s organs.
Two causes of diabetes are;
#1 - When the liver becomes overwhelmed with toxins, such as toxic colors, toxic preservatives, chemicals from prescription and or over-the-counter drugs it can no longer support the pancreas and therefore the pancreas shuts down and needs cleansing.
#2 – The body becomes so full of fat that it smothers all the organs then the pancreas fails again.
Here are a few facts to keep you from becoming one of those diabetic statistics!
1. Watch your diet. Eat as much whole foods as possible
every day! Do not indulge in fast or prepackaged prepared
foods! Of course I know you are not going to do that as
fast foods or prepackaged prepared foods are too easy,
at least limit them to once or twice a month.
2. Keep your minerals balanced to help every organ in your body function correctly while keeping a healthy
weight. If the whole world would get into the balanced minerals supplement daily there obesity and overweight people would be rare rather than 60% that exists now. Being overweight by more than 20 pounds sets you up for Diabetes.
3. Keep your Immune System Healthy! Just about
everyone ignores 75% to 80% of their immune system
because they have no idea where it is or what to do about
keeping it healthy. Where is it? The digestive Tract!
4. Do a liver and pancreas cleanse as often as needed!
Those living with toxic air, bathing or drinking or
cooking with chlorinated water and/or use toxic skin
care products need to do liver and pancreas cleanse
at least twice a year and every three months would be
best. For the person who eats a lot of prepackaged or
canned foods need three times a year minimum.
5. Eat organic foods as much as possible as they are
free of pesticides, fertilizer and GMO’s, this will limit
a toxic liver. Those chemicals build up in the body and
create all kinds of illness and disease in otherwise
healthy people.
6. Drink, bath and cook with pure filtered/purified
water! Our water systems are poison to us. Read
about the waterways
dangers!
7. Stay away from prescription drugs or over-the-
counter drugs. Every manmade drug (NSAIDS,
prescription of every kind) has a warning “liver
must be check periodically” or words to that effect,
on every single manmade drug! Fact; drug-induced
liver injury is the most common reason for the
withdrawal from the market of an already FDA
approved drug.
8. Exercise, exercise, exercise! That doesn't mean
you need to pay for a gym membership! A simple brisk
walk works!
The above is for those who have not been diagnosed
as a diabetic but if you are already a diabetic try
natural alternative treating to become diabetic free! Read
about one of our most severe cases
diabetic-free for a few years now. And now
that you can be just like Richard!
According to recent estimates, nearly 1-in-3 American adults have high blood pressure. But for the Kuna Indians living on a group of islands off the Caribbean coast of Panama , hypertension doesn't even exist. In fact, after age 60, the average blood pressure for Kuna Indian islanders is a perfect 110/70. http://hallosushant.blogspot.com/
Is it because they eat less salt? No. Kuna Indians eat as much, if not more salt, than people in the U.S. Is it due to their genes? No. Kuna Indians who move away from the islands are just as likely to suffer from high blood pressure as anyone else! So what makes these folks practically "immune" to hypertension -- and lets them enjoy much lower death rates from heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, and cancer?
Harvard researchers were stunned to discover it's because they drink about 5 cups of cocoa each day. That's right, cocoa! Studies show the flavonols in cocoa stimulate your body's production of nitric oxide --boosting blood flow to your heart, brain, and other organs. In fact, one study found cocoa thins your blood just as well as low-dose aspirin!
http://hallosushant.blogspot.com/
But that's not all. A Harvard Medical School professor claims cocoa can also treat blocked arteries, congestive heart failure, stroke, dementia, even impotence!
Painless cholesterol cure
works in just 7 days -- and drives
the "food police" crazy!
Want to lower your cholesterol so fast it'll make your head spin? It's a breeze, just eat guacamole -- or any dish containing avocados!
Most health experts and nutritionists will tell you this rich, delicious Mexican dish is BANNED from any cholesterol-watcher's menu. But not Dr. Steven Pratt. That's because new research shows eating avocados can lower your cholesterol even faster than drugs... without the side effects! http://hallosushant.blogspot.com/
One study found after just 7 days on a diet including avocados, LDL ("bad") cholesterol and triglyceride levels dropped by 22 percent. Meanwhile, HDL ("good") cholesterol shot up 11 percent -- something most cholesterol-lowering drugs won't do!
Sprinkle a little cinnamon on your toast, cereal, oatmeal, or sliced apples. It not only tastes good, it lowers your blood sugar! In a recent study, people reduced their blood sugar levels by as much as 29 percent in just 40 days. That's with NO drugs, NO diet changes -- just plain old cinnamon!
You've been told cancer runs in families. You've been told what to eat and what NOT to eat -- including LESS fat.
http://hallosushant.blogspot.com/
Yet Dr. Steven Pratt says there's onefat you should eat MORE of. It's the monounsaturated fat called oleic acid, found in olive oil!
It should come as no surprise. After all, olive oil is a staple of the Mediterranean diet. And people in Spain and Greece are far less likely to develop cancer than in the U.S.
But what's really interesting is how olive oil not only prevents cancer, it blasts away cancer cells that already exist! So if you're even the slightest bit worried about cancer, this is one SuperFood you don't want to be without!
Unless you've been asleep under a rock for the past decade, you've heard the news about tomatoes. They contain a potent antioxidant calledlycopene that's been proven to reduce the risk of certain cancers -- in particular, prostate cancer.
A famous Harvard study back in 1995 found that out of 48,000 men surveyed, those who ate 10 or more servings of tomatoes a week reduced their risk of prostate cancer by more than one-third. What's more, they lowered their risk of aggressive prostate tumors (the kind that are really tough to treat) by HALF!
But before you reach for that slice of pizza or bottle of ketchup, listen up. What if I told you about a sweet, refreshing food Dr. Steven Pratt recommends that's even betterfor your prostate than tomatoes?
This NEW prostate protecting champ is watermelon! Ounce for ounce, watermelon is even richer in lycopene than tomatoes. And since you probably eat more watermelon in one sitting than you do tomatoes, you don't have to gorge on it 10 times a week in order to slash your cancer risk! Just a few times a week should do it.
About 25 million Americans will suffer from a peptic ulcer at some point in their lives. To get rid of their ulcers, most will take an antibiotic like amoxicillin. http://hallosushant.blogspot.com/
Pretty tame stuff, right? Wrong! Amoxicillin can bring with it unwanted side effects like fever, nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, headache, even a yucky condition called "hairy tongue"!
And if you think that's bad, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the cost of treating an ulcer with antibiotics over an average 17-day period can run upward of $1,000!
Fortunately, there's one unconventional treatment with NO side effects Dr. Pratt swears by. "Eat broccoli!" he says. Why? Broccoli contains a remarkably potent compound called sulforaphane, which kills off the H. pylori bacteria that cause most ulcers. Not only can it knock out an ulcer, eating one serving a day for a month might run you 20 bucks... a fraction of the cost of drugs!
Since ancient times kalmegh, is used as a wonder drug in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic systems of medicine. The therapeutic value of Kalmegh is due to its mechanism of action which is perhaps by enzyme induction. The plant extract exhibits antityphoid and antifungal activities. Kalmegh is also reported to possess antihepatotoxic, antibiotic, antimalarial, antihepatitic, antithrombogenic, antiinflammatory, antisnakevenom, and antipyretic properties to mention a few, besides its general use as an immunostimulant agent. A recent study conducted at Bastyr University, confirms anti-HIV activity of andrographolide.
Kalmegh has been used for liver complaints and fever, and as an anti-inflammatory and immunostimulant. In clinical trials, Andrographis extract has been studied for use as an immunostimulant in upper respiratory tract infections and HIV infection. http://hallosushant.blogspot.com
The potential of andrographolide as an anticancer agent is being investigated. However, clinical evidence to support the use of Kalmegh for any indication is lacking.
Andrographis Dosing
The usual daily dose of andrographolides for common cold, sinusitis, and tonsillitis is 60 mg. Doses of 10 mg/kg resulted in the discontinuation of a clinical trial because of adverse reactions. Clinical trials in children with upper respiratory tract infection reported the use of andrographolide 30 mg daily for 10 days.http://hallosushant.blogspot.com
Dried Kalmegh
Andrographis Adverse Reactions
Headache, fatigue, rash, bitter/metallic taste, diarrhea, pruritus, and decreased sex drive were reported in 1 clinical trial. One HIV-positive participant experienced an anaphylactic reaction. Doses used in this trial were 10 mg/kg body weight.
Botany
A. paniculata is an erect annual herb that grows 30 to 110 cm in height and is native to India, China, and Southeast Asia. It is widely cultivated in Asia. The square stem has wings on the angles of new growth and is enlarged at the nodes, while small white flowers with rose-purple spots are borne on a spreading panicle. The plant produces yellowish-brown seeds, and all parts have an extremely bitter taste. The portion of the plant appearing above ground are harvested in the fall. The genetic variability of the species has been examined.http://hallosushant.blogspot.com
History
A. paniculata has been used for centuries in India, China, Thailand, and other Asian countries and is present in 26 different polyherbal formulations in the Ayurvedic traditional health system. Kalmegh is listed in the 1992 Pharmacopoeia of the Peoples Republic of China as a cold property herb used to rid the body of fevers and dispel toxins. An immunostimulant preparation known as Kan Jang , which contains Kalmegh and eleutherococcushas, been used in Scandinavian countries for 20 years. Kalmegh is also manufactured and marketed in the United States.
Chemistry
The diterpene lactone andrographolide was first isolated as a major constituent 6 and later characterized as a lactone. Its full structure was determined in the 1960s, and x-ray crystallography later confirmed the structure. A number of related minor diterpenes and their glycosides have since been identified. Methods of analysis, including high-pressure liquid chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance, have been published. A method for rapid isolation of andrographolide is also available. When callus cultures of the plant were investigated, andrographolide and the other diterpenes were not produced. Instead, the sesquiterpenes paniculides A-C were found. Other constituents of the plant include various flavones. http://hallosushant.blogspot.com
Andrographis Uses and Pharmacology
Antimicrobial
Extracts of Andrographis and andrographolide derivatives have shown modest activity in vitro against HIV ; however, a phase 1 study of andrographolide showed no effect on viral replication after 6 weeks, despite increased CD4 counts. http://hallosushant.blogspot.com
Activity in antimalarial screens has also been noted for Andrographis extracts, but clinical trials are lacking. http://hallosushant.blogspot.com
The extract of A. paniculata blocked Escherichia coli enterotoxin-induced secretion in rabbit and guinea pig models of diarrhea. Andrographolide and 3 other related diterpenes were responsible for this action. Other in vitro experiments present conflicting results for the action of andrographolide and leaf extracts on E. coli . http://hallosushant.blogspot.comhttp://hallosushant.blogspot.com
Cancer
Animal and in vitro experiments using human cancer cell lines to investigate the potential anticancer effects of A.
paniculata have found andrographolide responsible for the observed effects rather than other diterpenes. Various mechanisms of action have been proposed, including enhancement of chemokine activity, inhibition of tumor-specific angiogenesis affecting cell cycle progression, and induction of apoptosis. Cancer cell lines investigated include prostate, breast, cervical, colon, hepatoma, melanoma, and lymphocytic leukemia. Researchers are now focusing on synthesizing compounds based on andrographolide to improve selectivity and potency.
The need for caution has been raised by one group of researchers because andrographolide-enhanced SDF-1-chemokine activity might induce tumor cell metastasis. . paniculata extract has also induced cell differentiation in mouse myeloid leukemia cells. http://hallosushant.blogspot.com
Immunostimulant
Animal data
Both antigen-specific and antigen-nonspecific immune responses in mice were stimulated by andrographolide and an ethanolic extract; the extract was more potent than andrographolide, suggesting that other constituents also were immunostimulants. Inhibition of passive cutaneous anaphylaxis and mast cell stabilization was observed in studies of the purified diterpenes in rats.
Clinical data
A systematic review of 4 clinical trials found A. paniculata , either alone or in a fixed combination with A. senticosus ( Kan Jang ), significantly more effective than placebo ( P < p =" 0.0002,">
A small study in patients with familial Mediterranean fever (Nߙ=ߙ24) found a decrease in frequency, duration, and severity of febrile attacks, compared with placebo.
Stimulation of the production of key cytokines and immune activation markers has been investigated as potential mechanisms of andrographolide immunomodulation. http://hallosushant.blogspot.com
Other uses
Extracts of Andrographis have demonstrated hypoglycemic action in rats with streptozotocin- and alloxan-induced diabetes, supporting a traditional use of Kalmegh. Clinical trials are lacking.
Two older trials explored a possible hypotensive effect of andrographolide/Kalmegh, but further investigation has not been conducted.
Animal experiments suggest that the extract of A. paniculata is hepatoprotective, but clinical trials are lacking. Hepatic drug-metabolizing enzymes were elevated in 1 animal experiment, however, in a clinical trial, elevated liver enzymes (AST and ALT) were reported.
Andrographolide has demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects in several cellular systems, including prevention of phorbol ester-induced reactive oxygen species and N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine-induced adhesion in rat neutrophils, inhibition of tumor necrosis factor-induced upregulation of intercellular adhesion molecule expression, and monocyte adhesion 57 and activation of protein kinase pathways.
Dosage
Kalmegh dosage in clinical studies has ranged from 3 to 6 g of the crude plant.
The usual daily dose of andrographolides for common cold, sinusitis, and tonsillitis is 60 mg, but doses up to 1,200 mg have been reported. Andrographolide 48 mg daily was used in a trial of familial Mediterranean fever. Doses of 5 to 10 mg/kg were used in a trial in HIV patients, but adverse reactions at this dosage stopped the trial.
Clinical trials in children with upper respiratory tract infection reported the use of andrographolide 30 mg daily for 10 days.
Adverse Reactions
Research reveals few adverse reactions reported with the use of A. paniculata . However, adverse reactions (eg, headache, fatigue, rash, bitter/metallic taste, diarrhea, pruritus, decreased sex drive) during a phase 1 study of andrographolide in HIV required interruption of the trial. One HIV-positive participant experienced an anaphylactic reaction. Doses of andrographolide 10 mg/kg body weight were used when the adverse reactions became apparent. In the same trial, elevated liver enzymes were experienced by many of the participants. Two cases of urticaria have been reported in other trials.
Toxicology
Toxicology studies are limited, but Kalmegh does not appear to be acutely toxic. Acute lethal doses (median lethal dose) in mice are reported to be more than 40 g/kg for andrographolide.
Male reproductive toxicology of Andrographis has been studied. A subchronic 60-day study in male rats showed no changes in testicular weight, histology, or testosterone levels. However, detailed studies in rats given purified andrographolide for 48 days showed decreases in sperm counts and motility that were linked to disruption of spermatogenesis.
A small, short-duration, phase 1 clinical trial in healthy men found no negative effects at doses 3 times the usual daily dose of Kan Jang . Instead, a positive trend in the number of spermatozoids, percent active forms, and fertility indexes was found. Limitations of the study included the small number of participants (N = 14), the short duration of the study (10 days), and the low dose tested (3 times the normal dose versus 10-fold in animal studies).
Contrary to what you may have heard, there is no " diabetes diet," per se -- and that's good news! The foods recommended for a diabetes diet to control blood glucose (or sugar) are good for those with diabetes -- and everyone else. This means that you and your family can eat the same healthy foods at mealtime. However, for people with diabetes, the total amounts of carbohydrates consumed each day must be monitored carefully. Of the different components of nutrition --carbohydrates, fats, and proteins -- carbohydrates have the greatest influence on blood sugar levels. Most people with diabetes also have to monitor total fat consumption and protein intake, too.
To keep your blood sugar levels in check, you need to make healthy food choices, exercise regularly, and take the medicines your health care provider prescribes. A dietitian can provide in-depth nutrition education to help you develop a personalized meal plan that fits your lifestyle and activity level, and meets your medical needs.
Learn the ABCs of a Diabetes Diet
The goal of nutrition for people with diabetes is to attain the ABCs of diabetes. The A stands for the A1c or hemoglobin A1c test, which measures average blood sugar over the previous 3 months. B is for blood pressure, and C is for cholesterol. People with diabetes should attain as near as normal blood glucose control (HbA1c), blood pressure, and healthy cholesterol level.
Alcohol and Diabetes
Use discretion when drinking alcohol on a diabetes diet. Alcohol is processed in the body very similarly to the way fat is processed, and alcohol provides almost as many calories as fat. If you choose to drink alcohol, only drink it occasionally and when your blood sugar level is well-controlled. It's a good idea to check with your doctor to be sure drinking alcohol is acceptable.
Diabetes and Glycemic Index
For years, researchers have tried to determine what causes blood sugar levels after meals to soar too high in those with diabetes. Potential culprits have included sugar, carbohydrates, and starches, among other foods. The glycemic index is a ranking that attempts to measure the
influence that each particular food has on blood sugar levels. It takes into account the type of carbohydrate in a meal and its effect on blood sugars.
Foods that are low on the glycemic index appear to have less of an impact on blood sugar levels after meals. People who eat a lot of low glycemic index foods tend to have lower total body fat levels. High glycemic index foods generally make blood sugar levels higher. People who eat a lot of high glycemic index foods often have higher levels of body fat, as measured by the body mass index (BMI).
Talk to your doctor, a registered dietitian, or a diabetes educator and ask if the glycemic index might work to help gain better control of your blood sugar levels.
The glycemic load takes into account the effect of the amount of carbohydrates in a meal. Both the type of carbohydrate and the amount have an effect on blood sugars.
Eating Right on a Diabetes Diet
If you have diabetes, it's important to eat right every day to keep your blood sugar levels even and stay healthy.
Here's some easy tips:
* Be sure to eat a wide variety of foods. Having a colorful plate is the best way to ensure that you are eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, meats, and other forms of protein such as nuts, dairy products, and grains/cereals.
* Eat the right amount of calories to maintain a healthy weight.
* Choose foods high in fiber such as whole grain breads, fruit, and cereal. They contain important vitamins and minerals. You need 25 to 35 grams of fiber per day. Studies suggest that people with type 2 diabetes who eat a high fiber diet can improve their blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Similar results have been suggested in some studies in people with type 1 diabetes.
Serving Sizes and Diabetes
Be sure to eat only the amount of food in your diabetes meal plan. Excess calories result in excess fat and excess weight. In people with type 2 diabetes, excess body fat means less sensitivity to insulin.
Weight loss in overweight and obese people with type 2 diabetes helps improve blood sugars and reduces those risk factors which lead to heart disease. Your dietitian can help you determine the appropriate serving sizes you need, depending on if you need to maintain your weight, gain weight, or lose weight, and if you have high or low blood sugar levels.
* In women with gestational diabetes, it's important to eat multiple meals and snacks per day as recommended.
* Do not skip meals.
* Eat meals and snacks at regular times every day. If you are taking a diabetes medicine, eat your meals and take your medicine at the same times each day.
Note:
If you are taking some of the newer diabetes medicines, some of these tips may not apply to you; ask your health care provider the tips you should follow.
The Sweet Truth about Food and Diabetes
You might have heard that, as a person with diabetes, you shouldn't have any table sugar. While some health care providers continue to promote this, many -- realizing that the average person lives in the real world and will probably indulge in a bit of sugar every now and then -- have adopted a more forgiving view. Most experts now say that small amounts of sugar are fine, as long as they are part of an overall healthy meal plan. Table sugars do not raise your blood sugar any more than similar amounts of calories from starches, which is found in many foods that we consume. It is important to remember that sugar is just one type of carbohydrate.
When eating sugar, keep these tips in mind:
* Read food labels. Learn how to determine how much sugar or carbohydrates
are in the foods that you eat.
* Substitute, don't add. When you eat a sugary food, such as cookies, cakes, or candies, substitute them for another carbohydrate or starch (for example, potatoes) that you would have eaten that day. Make sure that you account for this in your carbohydrate budget for the day. If it is added to your meal for the day, then remember to adjust your insulin dose for the added carbohydrates so you can continue to maintain glucose control as much as possible. In other words, readjust your medications if you do add sugars to you meals.
* Sugary foods can be fattening. Many foods that have a lot of table sugar are very high in calories and fat. If you are watching your weight (and many people with diabetes must), you need to eat these foods in moderation!
* Check your blood sugar after eating sugary foods and talk to your health care provider about how to adjust your insulin if needed when eating sugars.
* Ultimately, the total grams of carbohydrates -- rather than what the source of the sugar is -- is what needs to be accounted for in the nutritional management of the person with diabetes.
Diabetes Diet Myths
Before you start a diabetes diet, get the facts. So many people believe that having diabetes means you must avoid sugar and carbohydrates at all cost, load up on protein, and prepare "special" diabetic meals apart from the family's meals. Wrong! Most individuals with diabetes can continue to enjoy their favorite foods, including desserts, as long as they monitor the calories, carbs, and other key dietary components and keep a regular check on their blood glucose levels.
Diabetes Diet Q&A
What Is the TLC Diet for Diabetes?
People with diabetes who have abnormal cholesterol levels will likely be placed on a diet known as a "TLC" diet. The TLC diet will help reduce the intake of cholesterol- raising nutrients. As part of this diet you may be asked to lose weight and increase physical activity levels -- all
of these are components that will help lower bad LDL cholesterol. Looking at food labels will help you become more knowledgeable about your intake of fats and cholesterol.
Specifically, the TLC diet calls for the following:
* Total fat consumption should be 25%-35% or less of total calories eaten
per day.
* Saturated fats should be less than 7% of total calories eaten in a day.
* Polyunsaturated fats (from liquid vegetable oils and margarines low in trans fats) should be up to 10% of the total calories per day consumed.
* Monounsaturated fats (derived from vegetable sources like plant oils and nuts) should be up to 20% of total calories per day eaten.
* Carbohydrates should be 50%-60% of total calories per day eaten
* We should eat 20-30 grams of fiber per day. These can be derived from oats, barley, psyllium, and beans.
* The amounts of protein in the diet should equal about 15%-20% of total calories eaten per day.
* Cholesterol content of the diet should be less than 200 milligrams per
day.
How Much Fat Is Acceptable on a Diabetes Diet?
People with diabetes have higher than normal risk for heart disease, stroke, and disease of the small blood vessels in the body. Controlling blood pressure and limiting the amount of fats in the diet will help reduce the risk of these complications.
Limiting the amounts of saturated fats, increasing the amount of regular exercise, and receiving medical treatment can lower bad LDL cholesterol. This has been repeatedly shown in medical studies to help people with diabetes reduce their risk of heart disease and reduce the risk of death if a heart attack does occurs in a diabetic person.
Can I Use Artificial Sweeteners on a Diabetes Diet?
Artificial sweeteners can be added to a variety of foods and beverages without adding more carbohydrates to your diabetes diet. Using non-caloric artificial sweeteners instead of sugar also greatly reduces calories in your favorite foods.
Keep in mind that foods with artificial sweeteners are not necessarily 'no' carbohydrates foods. Many have carbohydrates; therefore, you must read the food labels to determine the gram amounts per serving that these have in order to take into account the effect that these carbohydrates have on your glycemic control. Foods labeled with artificial sweeteners can affect your blood sugars.
As long as you are aware of the content of carbohydrates you can adjust your meal or medication to maintain blood glucose control. Sugar free means no sugar has been added, but you must remember these foods still contain carbohydrates which does affect your blood sugars.
Examples of artificial sweeteners you can use include:
* Aspartame
* Acesulfame-k
* Saccharine
* Sucralose
* Other non-nutritive sweeteners
Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid saccharine, and people who suffer from phenylketonuria should not use aspartame. People with phenylketonuria are unable to metabolize phenylalanine, an amino acid that's a common part of many proteins.
Some artificial sweeteners -- such as xylitol, mannitol, and sorbitol -- have some calories and do slightly increase blood sugar levels.
The American Diabetes Association cautions that eating too much of any artificial sweetener can cause gas and diarrhea.

Olive Oil
Four decades ago, researchers from the Seven Countries Study concluded that the monounsaturated fats in olive oil were largely responsible for the low rates of heart disease and cancer on the Greek island of Crete. Now we know that olive oil also contains polyphenols, powerful antioxidants that may help prevent age-related diseases.
Yogurt
In the 1970s, Soviet Georgia was rumored to have more centenarians per capita than any other country. Reports at the time claimed that the secret of their long lives was yogurt, a food ubiquitous in their diets. While the age-defying powers of yogurt never have been proved directly, yogurt is rich in calcium, which helps stave off osteoporosis and contains 'good bacteria' that help maintain gut health and diminish the incidence of age-related intestinal illness.
Fish
Thirty years ago, researchers began to study why the native Inuits of Alaska were remarkably free of heart disease. The reason, scientists now think, is the extraordinary amount of fish they consume. Fish is an abundant source of omega-3 fats, which help prevent cholesterol buildup in arteries and protect against abnormal heart rhythms.
Chocolate
The Kuna people of the San Blas islands, off the coast of Panama, have a rate of heart disease that is nine times less than that of mainland Panamanians. The reason? The Kuna drink plenty of a beverage made with generous proportions of cocoa, which is unusually rich in flavanols that help preserve the healthy function of blood vessels. Maintaining youthful blood vessels lowers risk of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and dementia.
Nuts
Studies of Seventh-Day Adventists (a religious denomination that emphasizes healthy living and a vegetarian diet) show that those who eat nuts gain, on average, an extra two and a half years. Nuts are rich sources of unsaturated fats, so they offer benefits similar to those associated with olive oil. They're also concentrated sources of vitamins, minerals and other phytochemicals, including antioxidants.
Blueberries
In a landmark study published in 1999, researchers at Tufts University's Jean Mayer Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging fed rats blueberry extract for a period of time that in 'rat lives' is equivalent to 10 human years. These rats outperformed rats fed regular chow on tests of balance and coordination when they reached old age. Compounds in blueberries (and other berries) mitigate inflammation and oxidative damage, which are associated with age-related deficits in memory and motor function.
The Organs of your body have their sensory touches at the bottom of your foot, if you massage these points you will find relief from aches and pains as you can see the heart is on the left foot.
Typically they are shown as points and arrows to show which organ it connects to. It is indeed correct since the nerves connected to these organs terminate here.
This is covered in great details in Acupressure studies or textbooks. God created our body so well that he thought of ! Even this. He made us walk so that we will always be pressing these pressure points and thus keeping these organs activated at all times.
So, keep walking...

It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion.
Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.
