Roosevelt signs legislation taking the United States off the gold standard, which had required that all paper money and coin be redeemable in gold. 1968: On the night he wins the California Democratic presidential primary, Robert F. Kennedy is shot by Sirhan B. Sirhan in Los Angeles. He dies of his wounds the next day 1783:The public first saw a hot air balloon fly on this date in 1783, in France.
