What Independence Day Is?

Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, while the world sleeps,India will awake to life and freedom.
A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation long suppressed finds utterance.
-J.L. Nehru

With these golden eloquent words at Delhi Assembly hall on 14th August,1947 midnight, India got its freedom. The words "Freedom" & "Independence" were something much more than mere words at that night, after a long British Rule of 200 years the never setting Sun of British Colonial Rule plunged and a new era starts, the era of freedom, liberty & independence.

But with the changing time the 22nd century comes and now we are in 2008, were every word and its meaning has modified. The perception of a free India has undergone a metamorphosis from 15th August 1947 to 15th August 2008. Independence day has also changed its forms and meaning, now its a holiday, a day when we sing our national anthem, play patriotic songs and every individual for some time has a flag in front of their vehicle or an emblem at their chest and for one day become jingoistic and chauvinistic. What does Independence Day remind us of ? Probably, school days — when we had to wake up early and go to school in time to salute the tricolour.

This has always been a hot discussion topic were every News channel and newspaper have the same headlines "Is Independence day more than a Holiday?". We see all the guys hosting the flag by the day and at dusk throwing away the tricolor. Has tricolor only an emblem of freedom or independence? Today, wearing a Sherwani is as much in vogue as is a three-piece suit. Khaki has gone away and freedom which should be feeling has now become a word of celebration. Is this what Mahatma Gandhi and our freedom struggle r had meant.

With every dawn their lies a responsibility to us, something which every individual should live and die for.
Facets including illiteracy, communal divides and corruption threaten to topple India from the pedestal that it is perched upon. We usually think what can an individual do? but we should remember that the nation is built up of individuals and with every changing individual the nation would change.

Every day is an Independence Day and every feeling should revels liberty of thought, action, speech and freedom. Rise up from the daily hassles and rise to freedom, Independence and give a value to your life and your responsibility to your life being an Indian Citizen.
